The white smoke has risen from the Sistine Chapel, and the bells of St Peter's Basilica have rung. A new Pope has been elected, and the leader of over a billion Catholics has emerged.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, 78, of Germany has been announced as the successor to Pope John Paul II, and has chosen the name of Pope Benedict XVI.
For Catholics worldwide, I'm sure this is exciting news. For the rest of us, while the new Pope is not a spiritual leader, he will nonetheless be considered a world leader, and deserves the full respect of that status.
